In the event of parents being absent from home, it is essential that the principal would have a contact person authorised by parent/guardian to whom she may refer your child. A mobile phone number where parents can be contacted would be sufficient in this instance. It is the experience of teachers that children are more alert and responsive if they have had a proper night s sleep, a balanced and regular diet and have not spent too much time watching T.V. or on a computer for too long. SCHOOL HOURS The school is open to receive pupils from 9.00am and children should be in their classrooms at 9.20am. School begins at 9.20am and ends at 1.00pm for Junior Infants; 2.30pm for Senior Infants and 3.00pm for all other children. Lunch break is from 1.00pm  1.30pm. No responsibility is accepted for pupils who arrive before 9.00am. In the case of children travelling by bus, the school cannot accept responsibility for escorting them from the bus to the school, or from the school to the bus. Nor can the school accept responsibility for looking after children after closing time. It is necessary that your child vacate the school premises by 3.00pm except if she is involved in an extra curricular activity organised by an authorised staff member. HEALTHY LUNCHES You may avail of the school milk scheme according to school conditions. CHEWING GUM ,CRISPS AND POPCORN ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE SCHOOL UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES Please try to avoid giving your child junk food and sweets in her lunch box. Glass bottles are not allowed. Please note that your child is not allowed to go to the shop to buy her lunch. If you wish your child to go home for lunch your signature is required on a special lunch form. SCHOOL UNIFORM The school uniform consists of white blouse, green tie, green pinafore/skirt, green cardigan/jumper and green or white socks/tights. Girls are not allowed to wear tracksuit/leggings or jeans under the uniforms. On the days that your daughter has P.E or swimming, tracksuits and runners must be worn. Tracksuits may be worn on one other school day at the teacher s discretion. Clothes and all belongings should be labelled so as to avoid confusion of ownership. The school is not responsible for damage to, or loss of property. The wearing of jewellery (long earnings, necklaces and bracelets) is not allowed. SCHOOL PLAYGROUND During playtime pupils should avoid rough play which may cause injury to others. Bad language will not be tolerated. Pupils should enjoy their breaktime. Three teachers are on supervision during the breaktime. Children must walk to and from the play area in single file. When going to the playground all classes walk in single file. At 11.00am rooms 3 & 4 go in single file to the play area through the main entrance. At 11.00am and 1.15pm Rooms 5, 6 & 7 go in single file to outer play area through back entrance. Rooms 9-11 go in single file to outer play area through main entrance. Rooms 13-16 go in single file to play area through the back entrance. Bell rings at 11.10am and again at 1.25pm. Pupils line up promptly and return to classrooms in single file. All class teachers collect children in the playground and escort them back to the class. HOME WORK It is school policy to allocate homework regularly and consistently. Homework is an essential part of school life. It is necessary so as to reinforce what has been taught, learnt and done in school during the day. Homework is allocated every night. Homework consists of written, oral or practical work. Oral or practical homework is just as important as written work. If a pupil fails to do homework, her teacher can require her to do it at a date and time to be directed. Constant failure to do homework will mean that parents/guardians of the pupils concerned will be contacted. In certain cases sanctions may be imposed. GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS Pick a suitable time for your child to do her homework. As far as possible a working place which is quiet, comfortable and free from distraction of radio, television, computer and other noises should be arranged. Show interest in her work. Check that her books and copies are kept clean and tidy. Check her diary every night, so that you know what homework she has. When you are satisfied that she has done her homework, sign her diary. Please ensure that your child goes to bed at a reasonable hour each night. GUIDELINES FOR PUPILS You must do the homework your teacher gives each day. Write down in your diary the homework the teacher gives you. When your homework is completed, your parents must sign your diary. Be sure to put your books, copies and diary in your bag to bring to school the next day. WHEN DOES YOUR CHILD NEED A NOTE? Following any absence from school. If a child has to leave school any day before the usual hour. If homework had not been done. If a child is going to be late for school. When she needs to be exempted from P.E or swimming due to health reasons. To stay indoors at break times for health reasons. The school should be notified immediately if a child is not returning to school after lunch. Awards System Our code of behaviour encourages a positive approach by rewarding pupils for: Good behaviour, consideration and respect for others. Punctuality Good attendance Work well done- in academic and non  academic areas e.g. Sport, Speech and Drama, Music, etc. Good effort Achievement Individual improvement We believe that our award system helps to build self-confidence, promotes good self-image, and empowers pupils to reach their full potential. Credit is given in a variety of ways. Affirmation is given when deserved by: Class teacher Principal Other Staff Members Pupils are congratulated through the school newsletter, which is issued once a term. Photographs of prizewinners are displayed on the notice board. Special events e.g. concerts etc are highlighted and encour aged. Certificates of achievements are issued. Certain privileges and treats granted e.g. video, no homework night etc. Small gifts as prizes. Merit Stickers, Stamps and Stars are awarded. Class responsibilities as rewards e.g. going on messages, distributing materials etc. helping the teacher to do jobs. Peer recognition in circle time. Teachers in Learning Support, and Resource Teaching are very aware of the importance of promoting confidence and self esteem in their pupils and building on and enhancing the work done by the classroom teacher. MISBEHAVIOUR We are very fortunate that we seldom have any instances of serious misbehaviour in our school. This is a reflection of the good homes from which our pupils come and from the liaison which exists between school and home. The following examples are considered to be unacceptable. Defying a teacher or other adult, cheekiness, disobedience, disrespect and sulking. Bullying. Vandalising, damaging or stealing school property, littering. Defacing, damaging or stealing the property of others. Truancy, irregular attendance and being unpunctual, dishonesty. Fighting, rough play and deliberately injuring others. Disruptive behaviour in class. Bad language, cursing and taking the Lord s name in vain. Leaving the classroom or school premises without permission or re-entering classrooms during playtime without permission. Constantly not wearing uniform. Using chewing gum, popcorn or crisps in school. Neglecting homework on a regular basis, copying homework, giving homework to be copied by others. See Anti  Bullying Policy Booklet in School if required. SANCTIONS Reasoning with pupil. Reprimand by teacher. (including advice on how to improve.) Sanctions within classroom. Additional homework. Detention during breaks. Loss of class privileges. Teacher records offence in classroom  Offence Book Warning by Principal. Pupil writes out rules which she has broken ten times and this must be signed by parents / guardians. Offence is recorded in Office  Offence Book . If the offence is recorded in the office  Offence Book a second time, a letter is sent home which must be acknowledged by parents / guardians. In the event of a serious offence, parents / guardians are notified immediately by phone or by letter at the discretion of the principal. If misbehaviour continues parents / guardians are required to report to the school and give a guarantee that this behaviour will not re-occur. Having gone through the above procedure, if there is still no improvement in the behaviour of the pupil, a temporary suspension will be considered. NOTES ON SUSPENSIONS Appendix A to circular 7/88 Rule 130 (5)  Rules for National Schools , states that: (1)  Where the Board of Management deems it necessary to make provision in the code of discipline to deal with continuously disruptive pupils or with a serious breach of discipline, by authorising the Chairperson or Principal to exclude a pupil or pupils from school, the maximum initial period of such exclusion shall be three school days. A special decision of the Board of Management is necessary to authorise a further period of exclusion up to a maximum of 10 school days to allow for consultation with the pupil s or pupils parents or guardians. In exceptional circumstances, the Board of Management may authorise a further period of exclusion in order to enable the matter to be reviewed . (2) In the case of a single incident of gross misbehaviour, or repeated instances of serious misbehaviour, the Board of Management shall authorise the Chairperson or Principal to sanction an immediate suspension, pending a discussion of the matter with the parents. PERSONAL HYGIENE Personal hygiene is very important. Parents should check their children s hair at regular intervals to ensure that it is in a clean and healthy condition. Regular baths are necessary for all active children. Special attention should be given to your child s hands and nails. Encourage your child to wash her hands after using the toilet at all times. The code will be reviewed at agreed intervals. September 2002 Introduction A positive school ethos is based on the quality of relationships, both the professional relationships between teachers and the ways in which pupils and teachers treat each other. The positive ethos permeates the activities of the school and helps in forming a strong sense of social cohesion within the school. Every effort will be made by all members of staff to adopt a positive approach to the question of behaviour in the school. The code offers a framework within which positive techniques of motivation and encouragement are utilised by the teachers. The school places greater emphasis on rewards than on sanctions, in the belief that this will, in the long run, give the best results.
