Reading is Cool....At Holy Family Girls’ School!

by Holy Family G.N.S. on 09 March 2015 18:36

World Book Week was celebrated in style on Friday March 6th in our school. The pupils were invited to dress as a favourite book character for the day resulting in a sea of colour and a fantastic, fun day of books, reading and discussion .Visiting a classroom on Friday, you might think that you were entering the pages of a fairytale book, as you met Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Puss in Boots and The Cat in the Hat, to name but a few. The rustle of princess gowns could be heard in many junior classes as the pupils proudly said their “princess” names and talked about their books.

Visiting author Jackie Burke who lives and works in Bray, Co. Wicklow was delighted with the pupils’ imaginative and fun way of celebrating World Book Week. Jackie who is author of “The Secrets of Grindlewood” and “The Secret Scroll” spoke to the girls about how she dreamed of becoming an author since she was a little girl. Her stories transport the reader to the magical garden of Grindlewood , where the animals who live there embark on a quest to defeat a wicked Warlock. Jackie spoke of her love of reading and writing and encouraged the girls to write down their own stories and poems. A lively question and answer session illustrated how thoroughly the pupils had prepared for the author’s visit.

A book token was presented to each girl in the school to be taken to local bookshops and exchanged for specially published World Book Day titles.  So, “Reading is cool!” and “Get excited about books!” are the messages from all the pupils in our school,  and they are already looking forward to World Book Day celebrations 2016!
